R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Morgan Ashley Benton is a courageous young Texan
1-2 whose exemplary response in the face of an emergency saved the life
1-3 of her grandmother; and
1-4 WHEREAS, A second-grade student at Kline Whitis Elementary
1-5 School, Miss Benton and her three younger siblings were staying
1-6 with their grandmother on the evening of December 3, 1994, when
1-7 their grandmother collapsed inside a locked room; trapped without
1-8 the oxygen hose she needs for her emphysema, the woman was in grave
1-9 danger when Miss Benton sprang into action; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Unable to immediately locate the number where her
1-11 parents could be reached, this quick-thinking young woman wasted no
1-12 time; she called the 9-1-1 emergency rescue number and spoke with
1-13 Susan Carpenter, a dispatcher with the Lampasas Police Department;
1-14 and
1-15 WHEREAS, After calmly explaining the gravity of the situation
1-16 to Mrs. Carpenter, Miss Benton obediently followed all instructions
1-17 given to her and delegated other responsibilities to her young
1-18 siblings, who ranged in age from five years to three months old; in
1-19 the moments before help arrived, this remarkable young lady did
1-20 everything possible to keep the perilous situation under control
1-21 and to avoid panicking the younger children; and
1-22 WHEREAS, Her bravery and resourcefulness expedited the
1-23 arrival of emergency personnel, thus averting an unnecessary
1-24 tragedy, and Miss Benton's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Craig Benton,
2-1 have ample reason to be proud of all their children for responding
2-2 admirably to a difficult and upsetting situation; and
2-3 WHEREAS, Displaying composure, intelligence, and maturity far
2-4 beyond her years, Miss Benton responded to this emergency as well
2-5 as, if not better, than any adult could, and her prompt action is
2-6 credited with saving the life of her grandmother; and
2-7 WHEREAS, Morgan Ashley Benton is truly an inspiring role
2-8 model to her fellow citizens, and the members of this chamber are
2-9 proud to join in honoring her at this time as a true Texas hero;
2-10 now, therefore, be it
2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
2-12 Legislature hereby commend Morgan Ashley Benton for her heroic
2-13 actions in an emergency; and, be it further
2-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-15 prepared for Miss Benton as an expression of highest regard by the
2-16 Texas House of Representatives.
