R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Dan Bus on July 22, 1993, at the age
1-2 of 66, deeply saddened the many friends and relatives of this
1-3 esteemed civic leader and newspaperman of Del Rio; and
1-4 WHEREAS, A native Texan, Mr. Bus was born in the community of
1-5 Ennis in 1927 to August Bus and Ann Barbara Kuchar and displayed an
1-6 early flair for journalism when he penned his first headline, "Boy
1-7 Expelled!" for his grade-school newsletter; and
1-8 WHEREAS, This accomplished professional went on to enjoy more
1-9 than three decades in the newspaper business as the editor of the
1-10 Laughlin Air Force Base newspaper, The Border Eagle, and as the
1-11 editor and general manager of the Del Rio News-Herald, winning the
1-12 respect and admiration of citizens throughout the community for his
1-13 fair and accurate depiction of local events and for his successful
1-14 promotion of the city's positive image; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Early in his career, Mr. Bus realized an important
1-16 personal milestone when he married Edith Marie Malek, with whom he
1-17 enjoyed an extraordinarily happy union that was blessed with four
1-18 daughters, Theresa, Veronica, Mary, and Barbara, all of whom are
1-19 honors graduates of The University of Texas at Austin, their
1-20 father's alma mater; and
1-21 WHEREAS, Envisioning a future role for Del Rio as a major
1-22 metropolitan center, Mr. Bus provided exemplary leadership to the
1-23 community on local civic affairs as the chair of the city's
1-24 economic development committee, as a charter member of the Del Rio
2-1 Beautification Foundation, and as a chief organizer of the Del Rio
2-2 Area Development Foundation, which led to the creation of an
2-3 industrial park in the city; and
2-4 WHEREAS, This remarkable gentleman also dreamed of one day
2-5 transforming the old railroad station in town into a modern
2-6 transportation facility and brought this worthy goal to fruition
2-7 with the construction of the city's Intermodal Transportation
2-8 Center that today serves the region's many residents and visitors;
2-9 and
2-10 WHEREAS, In recent years, this award-winning journalist found
2-11 a new avenue for publicizing the numerous attractions this historic
2-12 city has to offer as the publisher and editor of the popular Del
2-13 Rio Guide magazine; and
2-14 WHEREAS, Mr. Bus also was a staunch patriot who served his
2-15 country with distinction in World War II and the Korean Conflict as
2-16 a member of the United States Naval Reserve; he maintained a
2-17 steadfast devotion to democratic ideals throughout his life,
2-18 serving as the first director of his community's Red, White, and
2-19 Blue Revue in 1972, and in the years prior to his death he was in
2-20 charge of the flag raising each Fourth of July for the city's
2-21 Independence Day festivities; and
2-22 WHEREAS, Described by friends and colleagues as a man of
2-23 great honesty, intelligence, and humor, Dan Bus helped to shape the
2-24 destiny of Del Rio to the lasting benefit of its residents and was
2-25 in turn cherished by his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it
2-26 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
2-27 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dan Bus and extend
3-1 sympathy to the members of his family: to his beloved wife, Edith
3-2 Marie; to his daughters, Theresa, Veronica, Mary, and Barbara; and
3-3 to the many other friends and relatives of this fine man; and, be
3-4 it further
3-5 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-6 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
3-7 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
3-8 Dan Bus.
