                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas Public Broadcasting Association (TPBA) and
    1-2  the state's many excellent public radio and television stations
    1-3  have a long history of providing quality noncommercial informative,
    1-4  entertaining, and educational programs and services to the citizens
    1-5  of this state; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Texas became the birthplace of public television
    1-7  when KUHT-TV at the University of Houston conducted its inaugural
    1-8  broadcast in 1953, and public television stations across the Lone
    1-9  Star State have continued to be among the most innovative in their
   1-10  field, producing such highly successful programming as "Austin City
   1-11  Limits," "The Capitol Report," and "The Territory"; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, With the ability to reach more than 98 percent of
   1-13  the state's population, Texas public broadcasting ably serves its
   1-14  diverse citizenry by providing a broad spectrum of programming that
   1-15  embraces different age groups, ethnicities, and cultures; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Through the application of state-of-the-art
   1-17  technology and an integrated distribution system, public
   1-18  broadcasting is meeting its admirable goal of delivering quality
   1-19  programming, data, educational services, and community outreach
   1-20  services to its vast audience while developing a plan for the
   1-21  expansion of future services through the burgeoning information
   1-22  superhighway and using resources within the existing infrastructure
   1-23  to avoid costly duplication of services; and
   1-24        WHEREAS, Public television has both a storied past and a
    2-1  promising future in the State of Texas, and those who labor to
    2-2  ensure that this vital resource continues to fulfill its unlimited
    2-3  potential are truly worthy of special legislative recognition; now,
    2-4  therefore, be it
    2-5        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
    2-6  Legislature hereby commend the Texas Public Broadcasting
    2-7  Association and the state's outstanding public radio and television
    2-8  stations for their vital contributions to the citizens of Texas and
    2-9  encourage all state agencies to enter into partnerships with the
   2-10  TPBA to maximize the use of the state's public broadcasting
   2-11  infrastructure; and, be it further
   2-12        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-13  prepared for the Texas Public Broadcasting Association as an
   2-14  expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
