                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The passing of Sheriff Leroy Broadus on April 13,
    1-2  1995, at the age of 60, has brought a great loss to the many
    1-3  friends and relatives of this distinguished Texas law enforcement
    1-4  officer; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Sheriff Broadus was born August 17, 1934, in Hearne
    1-6  and like many of his generation, he was a dutiful and patriotic man
    1-7  who came to the aid of his country during the Korean conflict as a
    1-8  member of the United States Air Force; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, He began his noteworthy 36-year career in law
   1-10  enforcement in 1959 as a trooper with the Texas Department of
   1-11  Public Safety, and he settled with his family in Milam County in
   1-12  1964; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Deeply committed to public service, he was elected
   1-14  to the position of Milam County sheriff in 1976, and he served his
   1-15  fellow citizens with honor and distinction until his passing; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Throughout his distinguished tenure, Sheriff Broadus
   1-17  exemplified the highest standards of professionalism, inspiring
   1-18  others by his loyalty, dedication to duty, and exemplary conduct;
   1-19  and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Widely respected for his tough stand against crime
   1-21  and illegal drug trafficking, Sheriff Broadus increased the
   1-22  department's staff size from three deputies to seven, and under his
   1-23  watch the department joined the Central Texas Narcotics Task Force;
   1-24  and
    2-1        WHEREAS, A capable and effective manager as well, he helped
    2-2  establish a plan to more than double the county jail capacity, and
    2-3  he later worked with the Milam County Commissioners Court to house
    2-4  prison-bound inmates in area jails to control the number of inmates
    2-5  at the county jail; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Sheriff Broadus continued to make many significant
    2-7  contributions to the area of law enforcement as an active member of
    2-8  the Sheriff's Association of Texas and the Texas Peace Officers
    2-9  Association; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, He enjoyed the many close friendships he had formed
   2-11  throughout the years as an esteemed member of the San Andres
   2-12  Masonic Lodge and the American Legion Edwin Hardy Post No. 9; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, Sheriff Broadus was a man of tremendous integrity
   2-14  and courage whose exemplary record of public service speaks for
   2-15  itself; though his special presence will be deeply missed, his
   2-16  unique spirit will surely live on in the hearts and minds of the
   2-17  many people whose lives were touched by this remarkable gentleman;
   2-18  now, therefore, be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-20  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sheriff Leroy Broadus
   2-21  and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
   2-22  beloved wife, Patricia Broadus; to his daughter and son-in-law,
   2-23  Sandra and Jimmy Glaser; to his son and daughter-in-law, Michael
   2-24  and Victoria Lobe Broadus; to his grandchildren, Amanda and Derek
   2-25  Glaser; to his parents, Aubrey and Addie Broadus; to his brothers,
   2-26  LaVern Broadus and Jerry Broadus; and to his many other friends and
   2-27  relatives; and, be it further
    3-1        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-2  prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
    3-3  House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
    3-4  Sheriff Leroy Broadus.
