                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Houston International Sports Committee has been
    1-2  formed as a nonprofit organization for the purpose of attracting
    1-3  future Olympic and Pan-American Games to the city of Houston; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, The committee intends to prepare a bid for such
    1-5  games that will include the construction of new facilities and the
    1-6  refurbishment of old facilities without the use of taxpayer money,
    1-7  as was accomplished by the city of Los Angeles with the Summer
    1-8  Olympics in 1984; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Houston's hosting of future Olympic and Pan-American
   1-10  Games will provide enormous benefit to the entire State of Texas as
   1-11  well as the city of Houston and Harris County, specifically
   1-12  including economic benefits, and will be a monumental step in
   1-13  revitalizing the State of Texas as well as the city of Houston; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Hosting such games in the state will bring tourism
   1-15  and publicity to the state; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Houston's hosting of future Olympic and Pan-American
   1-17  Games will enhance the state's stature as an international
   1-18  participant and Houston's stature as an international city, thereby
   1-19  encouraging and promoting international trade within the state and
   1-20  promoting and fostering international relationships for the state;
   1-21  and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Hosting such games in the state will promote and
   1-23  foster a statewide community spirit; and
   1-24        WHEREAS, Bob Lanier, mayor of the city of Houston, and Robert
    2-1  Eckels, Harris County judge, as well as other community leaders
    2-2  have given their full support and cooperation to the Houston
    2-3  International Sports Committee and its efforts; now, therefore, be
    2-4  it
    2-5        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
    2-6  Legislature  hereby recognize the Houston International Sports
    2-7  Committee and endorse its efforts to attract future Olympic and
    2-8  Pan-American Games to the city of Houston; and, be it further
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives call on the
   2-10  private and public sectors within the state to promote the efforts
   2-11  of the committee to bring the Olympic and Pan-American Games to the
   2-12  city of Houston.
