                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, One of the most delicious agricultural products of
    1-2  the great State of Texas is the small and apple-like mayhaw, a
    1-3  fruit grown in hundreds of small orchards across our state; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, The mayhaw tree is a member of the rose family and
    1-5  is adorned with cascades of snowy white blossoms that form a lovely
    1-6  backdrop for the bright yellow and red fruits produced each spring;
    1-7  and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Long a favorite ingredient in traditional Texas
    1-9  jams, jellies, pies, cakes, and many other savory delicacies, the
   1-10  mayhaw fruit has been sought after by generations of Texans who
   1-11  have braved swamplands and river bottoms to successfully locate
   1-12  groves of mayhaw trees; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Through the combined efforts of Texas researchers,
   1-14  extension agents, and orchard growers, the mayhaw has been
   1-15  successfully cultivated for commercial planting; the delicacy is an
   1-16  ideal agricultural crop that easily lends itself to mechanical
   1-17  harvesting and is suitable for both large-scale and smaller,
   1-18  cottage-industry production; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, This superior product, now a common sight in grocery
   1-20  stores and gourmet shops, is an economic boon for its growers in
   1-21  the Lone Star State who, at present, are unable to produce enough
   1-22  of this tasty fruit to meet expanding consumer demands, and this
   1-23  burgeoning interest has brought well-deserved prosperity to both
   1-24  the producers and processors of this unique fruit; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, The success of the mayhaw as a commercial crop is a
    2-2  tribute to the ingenuity, hard work, and cooperation of Texas
    2-3  agriculturalists and their tireless labors in this regard have
    2-4  positioned Texas at the forefront of efforts to discover new uses
    2-5  for this delectable, versatile, and hearty food; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, In light of its many exceptional culinary and
    2-7  economic contributions to citizens of the State of Texas, it is
    2-8  indeed fitting that the mayhaw fruit be given special legislative
    2-9  recognition; now, therefore, be it
   2-10        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
   2-11  Legislature hereby salute and give official recognition to the
   2-12  mayhaw fruit and encourage all Texans to join in the appreciation
   2-13  of this distinctively delicious food item.
