No. 951 74R13161 WMS-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 the many brave individuals who served their country as members of 1-3 the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet during World War II; and 1-4 WHEREAS, America's submarine fleet conducted 1,441 patrols 1-5 during the course of World War II, facing difficult and dangerous 1-6 circumstances each time they took to sea, yet faced every peril 1-7 with the unflinching bravery and unequalled dedication to duty that 1-8 have served as the hallmarks of the American soldier throughout 1-9 this nation's history; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Submarines were used extensively in both the Pacific 1-11 and European theaters of operation and were extremely effective in 1-12 cutting off the enemy's supply lines and limiting the capability of 1-13 enemy vessels to fulfill their missions; and 1-14 WHEREAS, The first shore bombardment of the Japanese mainland 1-15 is indicative of the significance of the submarine in the war 1-16 effort in that it was made by the submarine U.S.S. Steelhead when 1-17 she shelled a steel mill on Hokkaido in the summer of 1943; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Over the course of World War II, the United States 1-19 lost 53 submarines and their crews, including 374 officers and 1-20 3,131 enlisted men who gave their lives in service to their 1-21 country; and 1-22 WHEREAS, The U.S. Navy's exceptional submarine fleet played a 1-23 vital role in securing final victory for our nation in World War II 1-24 and, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of that 2-1 momentous conflict, it is indeed fitting that the dedicated 2-2 soldiers who served in those vessels be given the legislative 2-3 recognition they so richly deserve; now, therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-5 Legislature hereby honor the valiant members of the U.S. Navy who 2-6 served their nation as members of its submarine fleet during World 2-7 War II.
