R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Y. C. Wang, the chairman of Formosa Plastics
1-2 Corporation, is an esteemed businessman and philanthropist who has
1-3 earned the deep respect and admiration of the citizens of Calhoun,
1-4 Wharton, Jackson, and Victoria counties for his extraordinary
1-5 contributions to the Gulf Coast region; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Impressed with the many benefits Texas has to offer,
1-7 Chairman Wang responded with enthusiasm to a delegation of Calhoun
1-8 County business and civic leaders who visited him in Taiwan and,
1-9 after careful consideration, decided to expand the local Formosa
1-10 plant in Calhoun County in 1988, building a state-of-the-art
1-11 petrochemical facility that has created more than a thousand new
1-12 jobs and revitalized the local economy; in addition, the
1-13 corporation's sizable domestic and foreign shipments have
1-14 transformed Port Lavaca-Point Comfort into the fourth largest port
1-15 in the state; and
1-16 WHEREAS, In the civic arena, Chairman Wang and Formosa
1-17 Plastics Corporation have played an instrumental role in improving
1-18 the educational system of Calhoun County through generous donations
1-19 to the local school district and the establishment of the $1
1-20 million Formosa Scholarship Foundation, designed to help graduating
1-21 seniors of Calhoun High School attend college; the company's
1-22 generosity also has enabled the Memorial Medical Center to
1-23 successfully complete the expansion and renovation of its
1-24 facilities; and
2-1 WHEREAS, Under Chairman Wang's inspired leadership, the
2-2 corporation and its local subsidiaries, Inteplast, Nan Ya Plastics,
2-3 and J-M Manufacturing, have forged strong community partnerships
2-4 that have significantly benefitted schools, housing, hospitals, and
2-5 emergency services in neighboring Jackson, Victoria, and Wharton
2-6 counties, as well as Calhoun County; and
2-7 WHEREAS, Equally dedicated to the improvement of the
2-8 environment, Chairman Wang and Formosa Plastics Corporation have
2-9 lent considerable support to a number of vital conservation
2-10 projects that have included efforts to save the brown pelican and
2-11 endangered sea turtles; the company's role in the development of
2-12 Lighthouse Beach in Port Lavaca led to a recycling "first" with the
2-13 installation of a recycled plastic walkway from which visitors can
2-14 view shorebirds and wildlife in their native wetland habitat; and
2-15 WHEREAS, This visionary philanthropist and the Formosa
2-16 Plastics Corporation have endowed a professorship in pollution
2-17 prevention at Southwest Texas State University and established an
2-18 agricultural and environmental research and development center in
2-19 the city of La Ward, entities that will undoubtedly enhance and
2-20 preserve the environment of the Lone Star State for future
2-21 generations of Texans; and
2-22 WHEREAS, Y. C. Wang and the corporation he leads have joined
2-23 with the citizens of Texas to form a mutually beneficial alliance
2-24 that has enabled a number of communities to grow and prosper, and
2-25 it is indeed fitting at this time that these industry leaders be
2-26 honored for their uncommon generosity and many priceless gifts that
2-27 will be of lasting value to the citizens of the Lone Star State;
3-1 now, therefore, be it
3-2 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
3-3 Legislature hereby commend Y. C. Wang and Formosa Plastics
3-4 Corporation for their outstanding contributions to the Gulf Coast
3-5 region and extend a warm welcome to this extraordinary businessman
3-6 and philanthropist on the occasion of his visit to our state; and,
3-7 be it further
3-8 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-9 prepared for Mr. Wang and for prominent display at Formosa Plastics
3-10 Corporation as an expression of highest regard by the Texas House
3-11 of Representatives.
