H.R. No. 992 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, On May 27, 1995, the National Park Service and the 1-2 United States Board on Geographic Names will pay tribute to the 1-3 life of an esteemed former legislator, the Honorable Calvin C. 1-4 Huffman, by officially dedicating a mountain in his honor at Big 1-5 Bend National Park; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The dedication of Mount Huffman will offer Texans 1-7 everywhere a chance to reflect on the pivotal role Mr. Huffman 1-8 played in the creation of Big Bend National Park, one of North 1-9 America's most beloved natural resources; as a member of the Texas 1-10 House of Representatives from 1941 to 1943, Mr. Huffman authored 1-11 the bill that laid the groundwork for the park's creation; and 1-12 WHEREAS, His tireless efforts in behalf of the park won him 1-13 the unwavering support of his constituents in Brewster, Kinney, 1-14 Maverick, Terrell, and Val Verde counties, as well as the respect 1-15 and admiration of citizens throughout Texas; over the course of his 1-16 distinguished tenure at the Capitol, he remained a steadfast 1-17 champion of the Lone Star State's majestic and diverse natural 1-18 heritage and represented the residents of District 87 with the 1-19 utmost integrity and commitment; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Awarded an honorary park ranger commission in 1-21 recognition for his exceptional achievements, Mr. Huffman retired 1-22 from public service in 1943 to practice insurance law in Austin and 1-23 to spend more time with his loved ones; a devoted family man, he 1-24 enjoyed a happy and rewarding marriage with his wife, Olive, and 2-1 was a loving father to his children, Patricia, Wayne, Richard, and 2-2 Gregory; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Today, his family members can take immense pride in 2-4 the knowledge that their father's efforts have helped to preserve 2-5 Big Bend National Park as a legacy for future generations of 2-6 Texans; Mount Huffman will stand as an eternal monument to the 2-7 courage, faith, and commitment he displayed in every facet of his 2-8 life, and it is truly a fitting memorial to a man whose vision and 2-9 determination continue to ensure that our state's natural heritage 2-10 will be protected and maintained in perpetuity; now, therefore, be 2-11 it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-13 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Calvin 2-14 C. Huffman for the vital role he played in the establishment of Big 2-15 Bend National Park; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-17 prepared for the members of his family as a commemoration of the 2-18 dedication of Mount Huffman by the Texas House of Representatives.
