H.R. No. 1080 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 Jakari J. Sherman for his many achievements and congratulate him on 1-3 the occasion of his graduation from Houston's Booker T. Washington 1-4 High School for Engineering Professions on June 3, 1995; and 1-5 WHEREAS, While a student at the school, Mr. Sherman has 1-6 distinguished himself through his outstanding science and 1-7 mathematics abilities, and he was a first-place finalist in the 1-8 science competition sponsored by the National Technical and 1-9 Scientific Association; and 1-10 WHEREAS, A young man of many diverse talents and interests, 1-11 Mr. Sherman also is well regarded for his skills as an actor and 1-12 orator; the vice president of the school's drama club, he recently 1-13 participated in the Texas Forensic Association's State Speech and 1-14 Debate Tournament, and he earned honors at the University 1-15 Interscholastic League's Regional Speech Tournament in April 1995; 1-16 and 1-17 WHEREAS, He also has competed in the National Association for 1-18 the Advancement of Colored People's Academic, Cultural, Technical, 1-19 and Scientific Olympics for several years, and he is a two-time 1-20 winner in the contest's oratory competition; and 1-21 WHEREAS, This well-rounded scholar also exhibits a wealth of 1-22 musical talents; he was a member of the Booker T. Washington High 1-23 School Marching and Concert Band, and he served as treasurer and 1-24 vice president of the Gents Club and as captain of the club's Step 2-1 Team; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Deeply committed to the betterment of his community, 2-3 Mr. Sherman has been active in scouting, and he has generously 2-4 given of his time, talents, and energies to repair homes for 2-5 Houston's low-income elderly through The University of Texas 2-6 Medical School's House Medics program; and 2-7 WHEREAS, He has sought to make a positive difference in the 2-8 lives of many area youngsters as a mentor with Durham Elementary 2-9 School and as a participant in the Male Initiative Program at 2-10 Kennedy Elementary School; and 2-11 WHEREAS, He recently was honored for his outstanding 2-12 achievements with the Legislative Black Caucus's Future 2-13 African-American Leadership Award, and he has received $26,000 in 2-14 scholarship funding to attend Tulane University; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Throughout his many endeavors, Mr. Sherman has been 2-16 nourished by an abiding religious faith; he is a member of Mount 2-17 Corinth Missionary Baptist Church and a speaker and a member of the 2-18 church's Soul Winners Action Team; and 2-19 WHEREAS, Jakari Sherman has demonstrated exceptional 2-20 intelligence, initiative, and maturity in successfully pursuing a 2-21 variety of academic, career, and civic goals, and he is indeed 2-22 deserving of special legislative recognition for his remarkable 2-23 achievements; now, therefore, be it 2-24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-25 Legislature hereby congratulate Jakari J. Sherman on the occasion 2-26 of his graduation from Booker T. Washington High School for 2-27 Engineering Professions and extend to him warmest best wishes for 3-1 continued success and happiness in all his future endeavors; and, 3-2 be it further 3-3 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-4 prepared for Mr. Sherman as an expression of high regard by the 3-5 Texas House of Representatives.
