H.R. No. 1099 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas Tech University Red Raiders athletic teams 1-2 have achieved outstanding success during the 1994-95 academic year, 1-3 earning conference titles in football, men's and women's 1-4 basketball, and baseball, marking only the second time in Southwest 1-5 Conference history that such a feat has been accomplished; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Under head coach Spike Dykes, the Red Raider 1-7 football squad captured the Southwest Conference cochampionship and 1-8 made its first-ever appearance in the Cotton Bowl as the conference 1-9 representative; for his superb efforts, Coach Dykes was named 1-10 Southwest Conference coach of the year, the third time in eight 1-11 years he has been accorded that honor; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The men's basketball squad also claimed a portion of 1-13 the Southwest Conference title and achieved a postseason berth in 1-14 the prestigious National Invitational Tournament, in an 1-15 accomplishment that helped Coach James Dickey earn his third 1-16 conference coach of the year award in the past four years; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Women's basketball coach Marsha Sharp, who has built 1-18 the Lady Raiders team into a national powerhouse, guided her squad 1-19 to its fourth consecutive Southwest Conference championship and an 1-20 Elite Eight finish in the NCAA tournament; she also was deservedly 1-21 chosen as Southwest Conference coach of the year, her fifth 1-22 consecutive year to attain that distinction; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Determined to successfully complete this banner year 1-24 in sports for Texas Tech University, the baseball team earned the 2-1 Red Raiders' first-ever regular season Southwest Conference and 2-2 conference tournament titles and Southwest Conference coach of the 2-3 year honors for Coach Larry Hays; and 2-4 WHEREAS, The men and women who represent Texas Tech 2-5 University in athletic competition are a tremendous source of pride 2-6 to the students and faculty of that fine institution as well as 2-7 their many supporters in the community, and their phenomenal 2-8 achievements are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition; 2-9 now, therefore, be it 2-10 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-11 Legislature hereby congratulate Texas Tech University's exceptional 2-12 athletic teams on their many accomplishments during the 1994-95 2-13 school year and extend to the Red Raiders sincere best wishes for 2-14 continued success in the future; and, be it further 2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-16 prepared for prominent display at Texas Tech University as an 2-17 expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
