No. 1108 74R14097 BNL-F R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, February 2, 1996, marks the historic 148th 1-2 anniversary of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, an event that 1-3 officially signalled an end to hostilities between Mexico and the 1-4 United States; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Signed in the towns of Guadalupe and Hidalgo, this 1-6 monumental agreement holds special significance for the nearly 20 1-7 million Hispanic-Americans who live in the United States today; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Though all Texans recognize the far-reaching impact 1-9 of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, Texans of Hispanic descent take 1-10 particular pride in commemorating the event that ushered in a new 1-11 era of understanding and cooperation between these two great 1-12 nations; of special significance was the treaty provision that 1-13 guaranteed mutual respect for existing land titles, thus enabling 1-14 subsequent generations to peacefully create a bilingual, 1-15 multicultural society; and 1-16 WHEREAS, The annual celebration of the Treaty of 1-17 Guadalupe-Hidalgo in communities across the state is indeed a 1-18 fitting tribute to the honor and bravery of those individuals who 1-19 held as their most cherished ideal the rights of dignity and 1-20 self-determination, and this historic event truly merits special 1-21 legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it 1-22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 1-23 Legislature hereby commemorate the 148th anniversary of the Treaty 1-24 of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, which helped to create an enduring bond of 2-1 friendship between the United States and Mexico, and acknowledge 2-2 its lasting significance to Texas and the nation as a whole; and, 2-3 be it further 2-4 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-5 prepared as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of 2-6 Representatives.
