H.R. No. 1196 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 Grant Teaff for his monumental impact on the sport of football as 1-3 coach of the Baylor University Bears; and 1-4 WHEREAS, After serving as assistant or head coach at Lubbock 1-5 High School, McMurry College, Texas Tech University, and Angelo 1-6 State University, Mr. Teaff took the head coaching job at Baylor 1-7 University in 1972 and guided the Bears to a level of success that 1-8 surprised even the staunchest fans of the green and gold; and 1-9 WHEREAS, In 1992 he completed his 20-year tenure as head 1-10 coach of the Baylor University football team and departed as the 1-11 most successful gridiron coach in the Bears' storied history; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Coach Teaff's enviable list of accolades includes 1-13 the 1974 coach of the year award by the American Football Coaches 1-14 Association and the Football Writers Association of America, six 1-15 Southwest Conference coach of the year awards, two distinguished 1-16 service awards from the Texas High School Coaches Association, the 1-17 Robert R. Neyland Memorial Trophy, the Distinguished Alumni Award 1-18 from Angelo State University, and the Alumnus Honoris Causa from 1-19 Baylor University; and 1-20 WHEREAS, In appreciation of his significant contributions to 1-21 the sport of football, a dinner will be held in Coach Teaff's honor 1-22 on June 1, 1995; sponsored by the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the 1-23 dinner will include among its guests such noted sports legends as 1-24 Tom Landry, Mike Singletary, Steve Hatchell, Fischer DeBerry, 2-1 LaVell Edwards, Ken Hatfield, and many more; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Throughout his remarkable career, Coach Teaff has 2-3 enjoyed the love and support of his devoted wife, Donell, and his 2-4 three daughters, Tammy, Layne, and Tracy; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Few coaches or athletes ascend to legendary status 2-6 in their given sport, but over the course of his 36-year coaching 2-7 career, Grant Teaff established unsurpassed standards of excellence 2-8 that may never be duplicated, and his many notable accomplishments 2-9 are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition; now, 2-10 therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-12 Legislature hereby honor Grant Teaff for his exceptional coaching 2-13 achievements and extend to him best wishes for continued success in 2-14 all his future endeavors; and, be it further 2-15 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-16 prepared for Coach Teaff as an expression of high regard by the 2-17 Texas House of Representatives.
