H.R. No. 1215 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, For 100 years, St. Philip's Episcopal Church has 1-2 been an integral part of the San Antonio community, as well as a 1-3 vibrant addition to the social and spiritual lives of generations 1-4 of faithful members; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Founded on May 7, 1895, this historic house of 1-6 worship was the first Episcopal church in our state to be dedicated 1-7 to the service of the African-American community; over the course 1-8 of the last century, members of St. Philip's congregation have 1-9 dedicated their lives to making their community a better place in 1-10 which to live, worship, and raise a family through their work with 1-11 the Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers and Sisters, the San Antonio 1-12 Ebony Fashion Fair, and the National Association for the 1-13 Advancement of Colored People; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Throughout its rich history, the clergy and 1-15 congregation of St. Philip's Episcopal Church also have been 1-16 leaders in our state's crusade to improve education; during the 1-17 early days of its existence, the church created the St. Philip's 1-18 Industrial School for Negro boys and girls, which later became St. 1-19 Philip's College, and today this fine church provides both 1-20 financial and mentoring support to the San Antonio public school 1-21 system as a participant in the city's Partners in Education 1-22 program; and 1-23 WHEREAS, St. Philip's Episcopal Church stands today as a 1-24 tribute to the hard work, faith, and devotion of its members, past 2-1 and present, who have given selflessly of their time, energy, and 2-2 resources to ensure its continued existence as a house of God; now, 2-3 therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas 2-5 Legislature hereby congratulate St. Philip's Episcopal Church on 2-6 the momentous occasion of the church's 100th anniversary and 2-7 commend its congregation on their many contributions to the 2-8 spiritual and social well-being of the citizens of San Antonio; 2-9 and, be it further 2-10 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-11 prepared for St. Philip's Episcopal Church as a commemoration of 2-12 the church's centennial anniversary and as an expression of highest 2-13 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
