R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, In 1982, Texas artist Kermit Oliver became the first
1-2 American ever selected to design silk scarves for the House of
1-3 Hermes, one of the world's leading purveyors of haute couture, and
1-4 since that time he has dazzled the art and fashion communities with
1-5 his intricate and deeply moving images of Native Americans and the
1-6 American West; and
1-7 WHEREAS, A native of Refugio and a graduate of Texas Southern
1-8 University, where he earned a degree in fine art and art education
1-9 in 1967, Mr. Oliver has created truly remarkable designs that have
1-10 been among the most popular ever carried at fine boutiques since
1-11 Hermes introduced its first line of silk scarves nearly 60 years
1-12 ago; his paintings, which are on display at the Hooks-Epstein
1-13 Gallery in Houston, have won the attention of countless critics,
1-14 collectors, and fans through their complex and often transcendent
1-15 vision of the American experience; and
1-16 WHEREAS, An artist of extraordinary talent, imagination, and
1-17 dedication, Mr. Oliver has brought increased recognition to the
1-18 Lone Star State through the beauty of his work, and his outstanding
1-19 efforts are indeed worthy of special legislative recognition and
1-20 praise at this time; now, therefore, be it
1-21 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 74th Texas
1-22 Legislature hereby commend Kermit Oliver of Waco for his many
1-23 exceptional artistic achievements and extend to him warmest best
1-24 wishes for continued happiness and success in his future endeavors;
2-1 and, be it further
2-2 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-3 prepared for Mr. Oliver as an expression of highest regard by the
2-4 Texas House of Representatives.
