1-6 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
1-7 AN ACT
1-8 relating to the exemption from tuition of a resident student
1-9 enrolled in the Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf.
1-10 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-11 SECTION 1. Subsection (a), Section 54.205, Education Code,
1-12 is amended by adding Subdivision (5) to read as follows:
1-13 (5) "Institution of higher education" has the meaning
1-14 assigned by Section 61.003, except that the term includes the
1-15 Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf.
1-16 SECTION 2. Subsection (a), Section 131.005, Education Code,
1-17 is amended to read as follows:
1-18 (a) A Texas resident student enrolled in the institute
1-19 <shall pay tuition at the rate provided by law for enrollment at
1-20 Howard County Junior College and> is <not> exempt from tuition fees
1-21 under Section 54.205 of this code.
1-22 SECTION 3. This Act applies beginning with the fall semester
1-23 of 1995.
1-24 SECTION 4. The importance of this legislation and the
1-25 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
1-26 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
1-27 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
1-28 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,
1-29 and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its
1-30 passage, and it is so enacted.
