A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT
1-1 relating to the Martin Luther King, Jr. statue fee at The
1-2 University of Texas at Austin.
1-3 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-4 SECTION 1. Subchapter E, Chapter 54, Education Code, is
1-5 amended by adding Section 54.5133 to read as follows:
1-6 Sec. 54.5133. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. STATUE FEE; THE
1-7 UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN. (a) The board of regents of The
1-8 University of Texas System may charge and collect from students
1-9 registered at The University of Texas at Austin a fee of $1 for any
1-10 semester or summer session. The fee may be used for funding the
1-11 construction of a Martin Luther King, Jr. statue on the east mall
1-12 of the campus of The University of Texas at Austin.
1-13 (b) The fees collected shall be deposited into the Martin
1-14 Luther King, Jr. statue fee account for the purposes outlined in
1-15 subsection (a).
1-16 SECTION 2. The changes in law made by this Act apply
1-17 beginning with the fall semester, 1995. The fee authorized by Sec.
1-18 54.5133 expires on August 31, 1999.
1-19 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the
1-20 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
1-21 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
1-22 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
1-23 days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,
2-1 and that this Act take effect and be in force from and after its
2-2 passage, and it is so enacted.
