No. 1 1-2 (In the Senate - Filed November 22, 1994; January 10, 1995, 1-3 read first time and referred to Committee on State Affairs; 1-4 January 30, 1995, reported favorably by the following vote: Yeas 1-5 13, Nays 0; January 30, 1995, sent to printer.) 1-6 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-7 WHEREAS, Section 4.10, Chapter 773, Acts of the 66th 1-8 Legislature, 1979 (Article 601b, Vernon's Texas Civil Statutes), 1-9 specifies those persons eligible for graves and monuments in the 1-10 State Cemetery and authorizes the legislature to grant eligibility 1-11 to other persons through the adoption of a concurrent resolution; 1-12 and 1-13 WHEREAS, John J. Grumbles came to Texas in 1837 and moved to 1-14 Travis County around 1840; and 1-15 WHEREAS, The second owner of Barton Springs, Captain Grumbles 1-16 operated a ferry across the Colorado River; and 1-17 WHEREAS, In charge of the barbecue held on the Fourth of July 1-18 in 1852 celebrating the then new "Colonial Capitol," Captain 1-19 Grumbles built the Swante Palm Log Cabin in Zilker Park; and 1-20 WHEREAS, One of the early Texas Rangers, Captain Grumbles 1-21 formed a company that fought in the Mexican War in 1845 and also 1-22 led a company of Rangers in the Indian Wars in 1850; and 1-23 WHEREAS, After his death in 1858, Captain Grumbles was buried 1-24 in the first grave in San Saba, Texas, which remains there today; 1-25 and 1-26 WHEREAS, The erection of a monument in the State Cemetery 1-27 requires legislative authorization; now, therefore, be it 1-28 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 1-29 hereby authorize the erection of a monument in the State Cemetery 1-30 in memory of Captain John J. Grumbles at no cost to the state, 1-31 provided proper application is made to the General Services 1-32 Commission as required by state law. 1-33 * * * * *
