No. 18 By: Zaffirini 1-8 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-9 WHEREAS, Violence in our society is pervasive, so that almost 1-10 every professional in a helping field comes in contact with someone 1-11 who has been a victim of violence; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The dynamics of domestic violence are unique and are 1-13 often misunderstood by professionals who have had no training on 1-14 the topic, and such uninformed professionals may harm rather than 1-15 help the victims they serve; and 1-16 WHEREAS, There is a dearth of instruction provided in 1-17 psychology and social work degree programs, and in universities in 1-18 general, related to recognizing and addressing domestic violence 1-19 issues; now, therefore, be it 1-20 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 1-21 hereby request the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to 1-22 conduct a review of all instruction provided by higher education 1-23 institutions, universities, and schools receiving public money, 1-24 including independent schools receiving tuition equalization 1-25 grants, related to domestic violence; and, be it further 1-26 RESOLVED, That by December 1, 1995, the Texas Higher 1-27 Education Coordinating Board provide a report of its review to the 1-28 74th Legislature; and, be it further 1-29 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 1-30 hereby encourage higher education institutions, universities, and 1-31 schools receiving public money, including independent schools 1-32 receiving tuition equalization grants, to offer instruction related 1-33 to domestic violence and require students working toward degrees 1-34 in, including, but not limited to, criminal justice, education, 1-35 law, medicine, nursing, psychology, sociology, and social work to 1-36 take such courses. 1-37 * * * * *
