SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The 74th Legislature of the State of Texas is proud
1-2 to join the citizens of Collin County in a joyous celebration of
1-3 Collin County Day on February 22, 1995; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Named for pioneer settler Collin McKinney, who built
1-5 a log cabin near present-day Anna in 1842, Collin County was
1-6 created from Fannin County and organized in 1846; originally Caddo
1-7 Indian country, the area lay north of the early routes used by
1-8 Spanish explorers; and
1-9 WHEREAS, On the Blackland Prairie of Northeast Texas, Collin
1-10 County has a rolling terrain that drains into the East and Elm
1-11 Forks of the Trinity River; the heavy black clay soil produces a
1-12 variety of native timber including oak, elm, bois d'arc, pecan, and
1-13 ash; and
1-14 WHEREAS, Collin County is a major agricultural area that
1-15 yields cotton, wheat, peanuts, alfalfa, and sorghum; beef cattle,
1-16 horses, and the dairy industry are important income producers; and
1-17 WHEREAS, The City of McKinney became the county seat in 1848
1-18 when it was moved from Buckner to a more central location; the city
1-19 has become a retail and wholesale center with varied manufacturing
1-20 plants; visitors enjoy the Heard Natural Science Museum and
1-21 Wildlife Sanctuary, the Bolin Wildlife Exhibit, and the Old Post
1-22 Office Museum; and
1-23 WHEREAS, Plano is one of the state's fastest growing cities
2-1 and has spilled over into neighboring Denton County; with a
2-2 population of 136,340, the city is fast becoming a commercial and
2-3 financial center; known as the "Balloon Capital of Texas," Plano
2-4 hosts popular hot-air balloon races in September; and
2-5 WHEREAS, Collin County is blessed with an excellent climate,
2-6 an abundance of natural resources, beautiful scenery, and excellent
2-7 recreational opportunities; its industrious, energetic, and
2-8 friendly residents are its greatest assets; and
2-9 WHEREAS, Collin County Day is an appropriate occasion for the
2-10 Texas Senate to recognize the important contributions that Collin
2-11 County and its citizens have made and continue to make to the
2-12 state's greatness as well as to the growth and progress of their
2-13 magnificent county; now, therefore, be it
2-14 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature hereby recognize
2-15 February 22, 1995, as Collin County Day and extend best wishes to
2-16 its residents for a most enjoyable and rewarding celebration; and,
2-17 be it further
2-18 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to
2-19 Collin County as a memento of this important day and as an
2-20 expression of the high regard of the Texas Legislature.
