S.C.R. No. 39 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-2 recognizing the Shrine of North America and the Shriners Burns 1-3 Institutes on the occasion of Burn Awareness Week, February 5 1-4 through 11, 1995; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Fire and burn injuries are leading causes of 1-6 accidental deaths in the United States, especially among children 1-7 and the elderly; every year more than two million people are 1-8 victims of some kind of burn injury, and more than one of every 1-9 three burn victims is a child; and 1-10 WHEREAS, It is estimated that approximately 75 percent of all 1-11 burn injuries and deaths could be prevented, and the Shrine of 1-12 North America joins other facilities in recognizing the urgent need 1-13 to further educate the public about burn prevention and fire 1-14 safety; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Well known for its outstanding work in burn 1-16 prevention and treatment, the Shrine of North America operates 1-17 three Shriners Burns Institutes to provide free medical care for 1-18 burn-injured children; the first of these was established in 1966 1-19 in Galveston, Texas; and 1-20 WHEREAS, The Shrine of North America has taken great strides 1-21 toward ending the tragedy of preventable burn injuries, and the 1-22 Shriners' exceptional efforts merit the praise and support of the 1-23 State of Texas; now, therefore, be it 2-1 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-2 hereby declare February 5 through 11, 1995, as Burn Awareness Week 2-3 and encourage all citizens to join in support of the Shrine of 2-4 North America and the Shriners Burns Institutes in their admirable 2-5 efforts to save lives and prevent burn injuries; and, be it further 2-6 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be prepared for the 2-7 Shrine Temples of Texas as an expression of esteem from the Texas 2-8 Legislature.
