SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes great
1-2 pride in recognizing Hugh Powers for his 31 years of loyal service
1-3 with the Houston Chronicle; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Born in Slaton, Texas, Hugh Powers attended West
1-5 Virginia University and worked with the Houston Press as city
1-6 editor before beginning his career with the Houston Chronicle; and
1-7 WHEREAS, Hugh Powers joined the Houston Chronicle in 1964 as
1-8 an assistant city editor and served as business editor and features
1-9 editor before becoming the paper's associate editor; and
1-10 WHEREAS, During his many years with the Houston Chronicle,
1-11 Mr. Powers received admiration and praise for his outstanding work
1-12 as an editor and his service on the editorial board, and he has
1-13 played a major role in making the Houston Chronicle the high
1-14 quality newspaper it is today; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Throughout his notable career, Mr. Powers has been a
1-16 leader in the community and has enjoyed the love and support of his
1-17 wife, Peg, and his two daughters, Nan Margaret and Sarah Ann; and
1-18 WHEREAS, Active in community affairs, Mr. Powers has served
1-19 as a director of the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce and as a
1-20 member of the advisory board to the University of Houston's School
1-21 of Communications; and
1-22 WHEREAS, In tribute to Mr. Powers's dedication and well-known
1-23 talent, the staff of the Houston Chronicle is honoring him at a
2-1 reception which is being held February 14, 1995; and
2-2 WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman with an
2-3 engaging personality and a wry sense of humor, Hugh Powers is
2-4 beloved and respected by his colleagues, and his presence at the
2-5 Houston Chronicle and that of his famous "acid pen" will be greatly
2-6 missed; now, therefore, be it
2-7 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-8 hereby commend Hugh Powers for his many contributions to the
2-9 Houston Chronicle and to our state and extend to him best wishes
2-10 for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further
2-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for him
2-12 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Legislature.
