                             SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown has provided
    1-2  access to higher education to thousands of Texans in the 20 years
    1-3  since its establishment by the Texas Legislature in 1974; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown serves the most
    1-5  ethnically diverse student population of any university in Texas,
    1-6  with an enrollment that is 31 percent Anglo, 30 percent Hispanic,
    1-7  24 percent black, 12 percent Asian, and 3 percent international;
    1-8  and
    1-9        WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown is continually
   1-10  improving accessibility to higher education through such
   1-11  initiatives as the Weekend College, which expands opportunities for
   1-12  community college transfer students and full-time workers to
   1-13  complete bachelor's degrees; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown is one of only
   1-15  eight Hispanic-serving institutions nationwide to be accredited by
   1-16  the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown is working
   1-18  closely with area school districts to develop a teacher education
   1-19  and certification program that focuses on training a pool of
   1-20  ethnically diverse teachers for the special needs of urban
   1-21  classrooms; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Through outreach programs such as the Jefferson
   1-23  Davis Educational Collaborative, the University of Houston-Downtown
    2-1  encourages inner-city students to remain in school and continue on
    2-2  the path to college; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, The University of Houston-Downtown works in close
    2-4  partnership with Houston's business community to benefit the city
    2-5  and state it serves; now, therefore, be it
    2-6        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
    2-7  hereby congratulate the University of Houston-Downtown for two
    2-8  decades of service to Texas and its people; and, be it further
    2-9        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-10  prepared for the University of Houston-Downtown as an expression of
   2-11  the high regard of the Texas Legislature.
