S.C.R. No. 76
                             SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is proud to join the citizens
    1-2  of Pittsburg in the joyous celebration of Pittsburg Day at the
    1-3  State Capitol on March 8, 1995; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Pittsburg is the seat of Camp County and the center
    1-5  of activity for the third smallest county in Texas, which was
    1-6  created and organized from Upshur County in 1874; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, Situated in heavily timbered country, Pittsburg was
    1-8  established by Major W. H. Pitts who migrated from Georgia in 1850;
    1-9  the early settlement became a shipping point for the county when
   1-10  two narrow-gauge railroads formed a junction at Pittsburg in 1877;
   1-11  and
   1-12        WHEREAS, A commercial center for farming, poultry, and
   1-13  livestock, Pittsburg is in one of the top 10 peach-producing areas
   1-14  in the state and also grows an abundance of blueberries and
   1-15  blackberries; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Pittsburg enjoys a varied economy based on
   1-17  agriculture as well as metal fabrication, recycling, woodworking,
   1-18  environmental equipment, women's formal wear manufacturing, and
   1-19  specialty food and egg production, all of which contribute to the
   1-20  wealth of the area; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Proud of their town's colorful history, Pittsburg
   1-22  residents have preserved many of its historic structures; visitors
   1-23  delight in the city's lovely old Victorian buildings while
    2-1  strolling through the vintage grocery, hardware, and drug stores
    2-2  and antique shops; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, Outdoor enthusiasts find relaxation and excellent
    2-4  recreational opportunities at the area's lakes set in scenic piney
    2-5  woods, Lake Bob Sandlin, Lake O' the Pines, Lake Cypress Springs,
    2-6  and Lake Monticello; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, One of the town's unique treasures is the full-size
    2-8  replica of the Ezekiel Airship built in 1902 by an inspired
    2-9  preacher-inventor based on a description in the Biblical book,
   2-10  Ezekiel; the original was destroyed in a rail accident on the way
   2-11  to the Saint Louis World's Fair in 1902; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, Pittsburg Day is an appropriate occasion for the
   2-13  Texas Legislature to recognize the important contributions that
   2-14  Pittsburg and its citizens have made and continue to make to the
   2-15  state's greatness and to the growth and progress of their beautiful
   2-16  city; now, therefore, be it
   2-17        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-18  hereby recognize March 8, 1995, as Pittsburg Day and extend best
   2-19  wishes to its residents for a most enjoyable and rewarding event;
   2-20  and, be it further
   2-21        RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to the
   2-22  City of Pittsburg as a memento of this special day from the Texas
   2-23  Legislature.
