                                 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, Gender-biased language in Texas statutes encourages
    1-2  damaging stereotypes that may lead to the unequal treatment of
    1-3  individuals based solely on gender; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, The Supreme Court of Texas established a task force
    1-5  to study gender bias in the Texas legal system, to determine the
    1-6  nature and extent of such bias, and to propose measures for its
    1-7  reduction and ultimate elimination; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, The task force determined that many Texas laws
    1-9  require revision to eliminate gender-biased language; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Inasmuch as the Texas Legislative Council is largely
   1-11  responsible for drafting bills and codifying Texas statutes at the
   1-12  direction of the Texas Legislature, the task force recommended
   1-13  amendment of the Texas Legislative Council's drafting policies to
   1-14  reflect a proactive stance in the elimination of gender-biased
   1-15  language and encouraged the revision of arcane language in existing
   1-16  law; now, therefore, be it
   1-17        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   1-18  hereby direct the Texas Legislative Council to amend the Texas
   1-19  Legislative Council Drafting Manual to reflect a proactive stance
   1-20  in the elimination of gender-biased language and encourage the
   1-21  council to undertake a systematic review and revision of laws
   1-22  enacted before 1980 to eliminate gender-biased language in existing
   1-23  law.
