No. 87 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome is 1-2 the medical term for a group of symptoms that include debilitating 1-3 fatigue, fever, depression, and a reduced ability to undertake 1-4 normal daily activities or to function productively; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The disease affects people of all ages, interrupting 1-6 the education and employment of those afflicted and imposing 1-7 enormous social costs ranging from burdensome medical expenses to 1-8 increased demand for disability payments and other social services; 1-9 and 1-10 WHEREAS, The syndrome was first recognized 10 years ago, but 1-11 there has been little effort to find either a cause or a cure for 1-12 the disease, with the result that patients are often misdiagnosed, 1-13 receive inadequate medical treatment, and can face difficulty in 1-14 receiving social services and public assistance; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Both present and future generations would benefit 1-16 greatly if the resources of government were marshalled to eliminate 1-17 the personal and social costs of this insidious and debilitating 1-18 disease; now, therefore, be it 1-19 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 1-20 hereby memorialize the Congress of the United States to increase 1-21 federal funding for research relating to chronic fatigue and immune 1-22 dysfunction syndrome; and, be it further 1-23 RESOLVED, That the Texas Secretary of State forward official 1-24 copies of this resolution to the President of the United States, to 2-1 the speaker of the house of representatives and to the president of 2-2 the senate of the United States Congress, and to all members of the 2-3 Texas delegation to the congress, with the request that this 2-4 resolution be officially entered in the Congressional Record as a 2-5 memorial to the Congress of the United States of America.
