No. 118 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Born from the immense pride all Texans have in their 1-2 state, The University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures in San 1-3 Antonio has served as the state's window to the world since 1-4 HemisFair '68; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The Institute, which was recognized by a former 1-6 Governor of Texas as "the most innovative education that I know," 1-7 and by a former First Lady of the United States as "the star in the 1-8 crown of Texas," has grown from its beginnings as HemisFair's Texas 1-9 Pavilion to a premiere university educational center charged with 1-10 the enhancement of intercultural understanding in the State of 1-11 Texas; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The Institute serves the peoples of Texas by helping 1-13 them preserve and honor their heritage and educate others about the 1-14 contributions of all who settled this state; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Hundreds of thousands of people visited the 1-16 Institute last year to view exhibits, participate in special 1-17 programs and classes, and attend special events, including the 1-18 annual Texas Folklife Festival; and 1-19 WHEREAS, More than 90,000 schoolchildren received a "tour of 1-20 history," thereby expanding their knowledge of this great state, 1-21 its history, and the people who made it what it is today; another 1-22 75,000 benefitted from the Institute's educational outreach 1-23 programs, instructed by docents from a corps of more than 400 2-1 Institute volunteers; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Adults of all ages, from young singles to senior 2-3 citizens, came to the Institute to discover their roots on the 2-4 exhibit floor or in the Institute's photo library of two million 2-5 images or to simply savor the ethnic diversity that is Texas; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Institute programs, events, and products have 2-7 enlightened people from all walks of life about Texas and its 2-8 people, thereby encouraging acceptance and appreciation of their 2-9 differences as well as their common humanity; now, therefore, be it 2-10 RESOLVED by the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas, That 2-11 the week of April 9 through April 15, 1995, be proclaimed Institute 2-12 of Texan Cultures Week, during which all who visit the Central 2-13 Gallery of the Capitol Extension can enjoy the Institute's 2-14 traveling exhibits and other educational materials on display for 2-15 the people of the State of Texas, for whom they were created.
