S.C.R. No. 129 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes great 1-2 pride in recognizing Hermann Hospital of Houston on the grand 1-3 occasion of the celebration of its 70th anniversary year; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Hermann Hospital is a private, not-for-profit 1-5 hospital founded as a gift from philanthropist George H. Hermann to 1-6 the people of the City of Houston; and 1-7 WHEREAS, His dream was to provide a hospital dedicated to 1-8 providing excellence in medicine and compassionate care for all; 1-9 and 1-10 WHEREAS, Hermann Hospital opened its doors on July 13, 1925, 1-11 on a remote tract of land that would later become the 1-12 world-renowned Texas Medical Center; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Through the years, in addition to innovative patient 1-14 care, Hermann Hospital's mission has expanded to include teaching 1-15 and medical research as the primary teaching hospital for The 1-16 University of Texas Medical School at Houston; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Hermann Children's Hospital also serves as the 1-18 primary pediatric teaching hospital for The University of Texas 1-19 Medical School at Houston; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Hermann Life Flight became one of the first air 1-21 ambulance services in the United States in 1976 and is now the only 1-22 hospital-based air ambulance service serving Harris County; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Hermann Hospital is the only state-designated, Level 2-1 One trauma center in Houston serving more than 45,000 patients per 2-2 year; and 2-3 WHEREAS, In 1994, Hermann Hospital provided $103,032,000 in 2-4 charitable services and benefits to the community out of a total 2-5 net patient revenue of $419,013,000; and 2-6 WHEREAS, Hermann Hospital and Hermann Children's Hospital are 2-7 among the busiest kidney and liver transplant centers in the United 2-8 States; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Hermann Hospital has long been a center for treating 2-10 heart disease in southeast Texas; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Hermann Hospital is known for many achievements 2-12 including: conducting the first successful "blue baby" operation 2-13 outside of Johns Hopkins Hospital; one of the first stereotactic 2-14 operations to reverse the effects of Parkinson's disease; Houston's 2-15 first combined kidney/liver transplant; Houston's first living 2-16 donor liver transplant; and the world's first hand transplant; now, 2-17 therefore, be it 2-18 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-19 hereby commend Hermann Hospital for its worthy accomplishments and 2-20 extend congratulations to its physicians and employees; and, be it 2-21 further 2-22 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the 2-23 physicians and employees of Hermann Hospital for suitable display 2-24 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Legislature.
