                             SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, On Wednesday, May 3, 1995, Washington County Day
    1-2  will be celebrated by the proud citizens of Washington County in
    1-3  recognition of their illustrious county and its contributions to
    1-4  the State of Texas; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The county, in southeast Central Texas, has an area
    1-6  of 611 square miles drained principally by the Brazos River; partly
    1-7  in the post oak belt and partly on the prairie, the county has
    1-8  level to rolling terrain; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Created in 1836, Washington County was organized in
   1-10  1837; present day Washington County's most famous town is
   1-11  Washington-on-the-Brazos; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, The town was established in 1834 near the location
   1-13  of a Brazos River ferry that had operated since 1822; the town
   1-14  achieved prominence during the Texas Revolution in 1836 as the site
   1-15  of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence and the
   1-16  drafting of the Constitution of the newly born Republic of Texas;
   1-17  and
   1-18        WHEREAS, Today most income in the county comes from the
   1-19  raising of cattle, hogs, horses, dairy products, and poultry; the
   1-20  main crops are hay, cotton, and horticultural plants; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, The county seat of Brenham is the home of Blue Bell
   1-22  Creameries, Blinn College, and the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Washington County also boasts many facilities that
    2-1  attract tourists; Somerville Lake offers numerous opportunities for
    2-2  fishing and hunting; there are lovely bluebonnet trails in the
    2-3  spring and a cotton-gin festival in April; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Adding to the rich cultural heritage of the area are
    2-5  Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park, the Texas Baptist Historical
    2-6  Museum, and the Star of the Republic Museum, as well as the many
    2-7  historical sites; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, Among the chief assets of the county are its
    2-9  friendly and hospitable citizenry; the residents of the area have
   2-10  made it one of the outstanding areas of the state; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, The many contributions of the residents of the
   2-12  county to the State of Texas are truly worthy of legislative
   2-13  recognition and praise; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, It is indeed a pleasure and a privilege for the
   2-15  Texas Legislature to honor this outstanding Texas county and its
   2-16  fine citizens; now, therefore, be it
   2-17        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-18  hereby extend sincere congratulations to the fine citizens of
   2-19  Washington County on its special day and offer best wishes for a
   2-20  memorable and joyous celebration; and, be it further
   2-21        RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for
   2-22  Washington County as a memento of this special day.
