                             SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, Awareness of prostate cancer can result in early
    1-2  detection and cure; and
    1-3        WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed
    1-4  cancer in American men and is the second leading cause of male
    1-5  cancer deaths in the United States; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, It is estimated that in 1995 there will be 244,000
    1-7  new cases diagnosed and 40,400 deaths in the United States,
    1-8  including 13,000 new cases and 2,200 deaths in the State of Texas;
    1-9  and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Nearly one million American men have prostate cancer
   1-11  and are unaware of it; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Improved public awareness of the disparity in
   1-13  funding for prostate cancer research, as compared to the research
   1-14  funding for other major killer diseases, will help bring a halt to
   1-15  this inequity and thereby save men's lives; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The Congress of the United States of America has
   1-17  designated a week as Prostate Cancer Awareness Week in an effort to
   1-18  promote education, awareness, and understanding of this disease,
   1-19  and it is appropriate for the Lone Star State to join men, their
   1-20  families, and loved ones throughout Texas in recognizing the
   1-21  importance of this disease; now, therefore, be it
   1-22        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   1-23  hereby designate the week of each year that begins with Father's
    2-1  Day as Texas Prostate Cancer Awareness Week to encourage men to
    2-2  have an annual examination and PSA test as they approach the age of
    2-3  50 to promote the early detection and treatment of prostate cancer
    2-4  for the preservation of their lives.
