                             SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, Emily Y. Lewis contributed significantly to the
    1-2  education of deaf persons in Texas; and
    1-3        WHEREAS, Miss Lewis was born south of LaGrange, Texas, in
    1-4  1844, and she enrolled at the Texas School for the Deaf in 1857, at
    1-5  the age of 12; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Miss Lewis, who was the first female student of the
    1-7  school, began teaching at the school after her graduation in 1864
    1-8  and taught until 1876; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Miss Lewis returned to teach at the Texas School for
   1-10  the Deaf in 1880 and became the school's first female principal;
   1-11  and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Miss Lewis served the Texas School for the Deaf for
   1-13  a total of 56 years; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Building 532 on the campus of the Texas School for
   1-15  the Deaf in Austin had been named Emily Lewis Hall, but this
   1-16  building was demolished as part of the current construction project
   1-17  at the school; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, It is fitting that a building on the campus continue
   1-19  to be named in honor of Emily Y. Lewis and her contribution to the
   1-20  education of deaf persons in the state; now, therefore, be it
   1-21        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   1-22  hereby direct that the new girls' dormitory on the campus of the
   1-23  Texas School for the Deaf, located at 1102 South Congress Avenue,
    2-1  Austin, Texas, be named Emily Lewis Hall.
