S.C.R. No. 148
                             SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, John Salmon Ford was appointed the third
    1-2  superintendent of the Texas School for the Deaf in 1879 by Governor
    1-3  O. M. Robert; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Mr. Ford had served as Mayor of Austin, a state
    1-5  senator, a Texas Ranger, and a newspaper publisher; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, He was a strong supporter of vocational education
    1-7  and expanded the vocational classes of the Texas School for the
    1-8  Deaf to include bookkeeping, shoe repair, and mattress-making
    1-9  during his tenure as superintendent of the school; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Mr. Ford first successfully established school rules
   1-11  which were printed and distributed to all students; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, He helped complete a major building program at the
   1-13  school; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, It is fitting that a building on the campus of the
   1-15  Texas School for the Deaf be named in his honor; now, therefore, be
   1-16  it
   1-17        RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas
   1-18  hereby direct that the Vocational School on the campus of the Texas
   1-19  School for the Deaf, located at 1102 South Congress Avenue, Austin,
   1-20  Texas, be named the John Salmon Ford Building.
