S.C.R. No. 175 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is proud to 1-2 recognize Dr. Kenneth Thomas who has served as principal of 1-3 Armstrong Elementary School of the Highland Park Independent School 1-4 District since 1978 and is retiring after 17 years of loyal 1-5 service; and 1-6 WHEREAS, During Dr. Thomas's service as principal, Armstrong 1-7 Elementary School was selected as one of the outstanding elementary 1-8 schools in the country by the United States Department of 1-9 Education; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous honors, Dr. Thomas was 1-11 named the Outstanding Graduate of the College of Education by the 1-12 University of North Texas, both in Education and Administration, 1-13 and the Outstanding Elementary Principal by District X, Texas 1-14 Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association; he was also 1-15 chosen to be a member of Academy I, a group of 100 selected 1-16 principals in the state; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Prior to joining Highland Park Independent School 1-18 District, Dr. Thomas served as Principal of Preston Hollow 1-19 Elementary School and Herbert Marcus Elementary School of the 1-20 Dallas Independent School District; he was also a teacher at John 1-21 J. Pershing Elementary School and F. P. Caillet Elementary School 1-22 of the Dallas Independent School District and T. J. Lee Elementary 1-23 School of the Irving Independent School District; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas's educational background includes a 2-2 doctorate in education from the University of North Texas, as well 2-3 as advanced training and special workshops at The University of 2-4 Texas at Austin, the University of California at Los Angeles, and 2-5 East Texas State University; and 2-6 WHEREAS, In addition to his professional service, Dr. Thomas 2-7 has continued to be active in his community; he has served as a 2-8 Sunday school teacher for 26 years, as a Deacon at Park Cities 2-9 Baptist Church, as a Scout leader for Boy Scout Troop 35 at 2-10 Armstrong Elementary School, and as a member of the Board of the 2-11 Highland Park Library; he has also served as a member of the board 2-12 of the Family Counseling Center in Dallas; and 2-13 WHEREAS, Dr. Kenneth Thomas is a devoted husband and father; 2-14 he and his wife of 29 years, Marjanna Norton Thomas, are the 2-15 parents of two children, Joel and Karl, both of whom are Eagle 2-16 Scouts and recent college graduates; now, therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the 74th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-18 hereby salute Dr. Kenneth D. Thomas for his many years of excellent 2-19 educational leadership at Armstrong Elementary School and extend to 2-20 him best wishes for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be prepared for Dr. 2-22 Thomas, his family, and Armstrong Elementary School.
