    1-6                        SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION
    1-7  proposing a constitutional amendment to authorize the legislature
    1-8  to exempt from ad valorem taxation certain property of certain
    1-9  organizations chartered by the Congress of the Republic of Texas.
   1-10        BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
   1-11        SECTION 1.  Article VIII, Section 2, of the Texas
   1-12  Constitution is amended by adding Subsection (d) to read as
   1-13  follows:
   1-14        (d)  The legislature by general law may exempt from ad
   1-15  valorem taxation the property of an organization chartered by the
   1-16  Congress of the Republic of Texas that has been in continuous
   1-17  existence since the date it was chartered if the property is used
   1-18  primarily for the charitable, benevolent, or public service
   1-19  activities of the organization as defined by general law.  The
   1-20  legislature may provide for the administration of an exemption
   1-21  authorized by this subsection and may provide additional
   1-22  qualifications and limitations for an exemption authorized by this
   1-23  subsection.
   1-24        SECTION 2.  This proposed constitutional amendment shall be
   1-25  submitted to the voters at an election to be held November 7, 1995.
   1-26  The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against the
   1-27  proposition:  "The constitutional amendment to authorize the
   1-28  legislature to exempt from ad valorem taxation property of an
   1-29  organization chartered by the Congress of the Republic of Texas
   1-30  that is used primarily for the charitable, benevolent, or public
   1-31  service activities of the organization."
