    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                           Joe Luis Arriaga
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
    1-6  of San Antonio in mourning the tragic loss of Joe Luis Arriaga, who
    1-7  died November 14, 1994, at the age of 47; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, The highly respected educator devoted his life to
    1-9  his profession and was responsible for improving the educational
   1-10  standards of the community where he taught; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, The oldest of five children, the San Antonio native
   1-12  was born on April 18, 1947, and graduated from Jefferson High School;
   1-13  he earned a degree in history from Saint Mary's University in 1969
   1-14  and that same year began his notable career in the Edgewood School
   1-15  District as a fifth-grade teacher; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, When Mr. Arriaga became principal of the Truman
   1-17  Middle School in 1975, he was recognized as the youngest principal
   1-18  in Texas; he became the youngest principal of a 5A high school when
   1-19  he was named the principal of Memorial High School in 1977; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, During the next five years, Mr. Arriaga worked
   1-21  steadily with parents and teachers to bring about needed changes
   1-22  in the curriculum; he became principal of Southside High School in
   1-23  1981 and during his seven-year tenure, the school changed from 3A
    2-1  to 4A status; he was responsible for introducing advanced-placement
    2-2  programs at both high schools; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, His tireless efforts to help the community realize
    2-4  the benefits of a higher education resulted in 65 to 75 percent of
    2-5  the Southside graduates attending college; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Throughout his productive career, Mr. Arriaga
    2-7  carried out his duties with integrity and fairness, and, through
    2-8  his achievements and abilities, contributed immeasurably to the
    2-9  development of the educational system of our state; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, His contributions will continue to bear fruit as
   2-11  those who pursue a higher education return to their communities
   2-12  as teachers, administrators, and productive members of society;
   2-13  now, therefore, be it
   2-14        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-15  74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family
   2-16  of Joe Luis Arriaga:  his daughter, Patricia Marie Arriaga; his
   2-17  parents, Joe and Olivia Arriaga; and his sisters, Gloria Gutierrez,
   2-18  Cynthia A. Arriaga, and Janie Roussin; and, be it further
   2-19        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-20  the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
   2-21  the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
   2-22  so in memory of Joe Luis Arriaga.
