No. 42 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-3 recognize Marla Lorrain Travis Barfield for her many contributions 1-4 on behalf of her fellow citizens; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Born on January 4, 1961, in Fort Hood, Texas, she 1-6 attended Southwest Texas State University after she was named 1-7 to Who's Who in Music and the Society of Distinguished American 1-8 High School Students; and 1-9 WHEREAS, While she was attending the University of Houston, 1-10 she met and married Jesse Barfield, and the devoted couple made a 1-11 home and are raising their three children, Joshua, Jessica, and 1-12 Jeremy; and 1-13 WHEREAS, A full-time wife and mother who supports her husband 1-14 in his career, Marla has always found several ways to involve 1-15 herself in activities that have benefitted her community; a 1-16 homeroom mother for each of her children, two of whom still 1-17 attend Abercrombie Academy, she is presently homeroom mother 1-18 for Jessica; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Wherever she has lived, Marla Barfield has taken the 1-20 time to get involved; she and other baseball players' wives 1-21 visited sick children in hospitals in New York and Toronto; and 1-22 WHEREAS, When Jesse was traded to the New York Yankees, Marla 1-23 immediately began to organize a greatly needed food drive for the 2-1 area; the drive was such a success that after Marla left New York, 2-2 she was called for advice about how to set up another food drive; 2-3 and 2-4 WHEREAS, When she was in Toronto, she coordinated a style 2-5 show that featured the wives of the Toronto Blue Jays and their 2-6 husbands, with the proceeds going to charity; the wives also 2-7 initiated food drives for charity and the community; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Marla Barfield has also worked extensively with the 2-9 Children's Miracle Network and the Hermann Hospital's Pediatric 2-10 Intensive Care Unit; and 2-11 WHEREAS, This remarkable woman has always formed Bible 2-12 studies during spring training; she has ministered to women's 2-13 retreats at the Burchfield camp in Columbus, Texas, and she was 2-14 honored by the Kappa Delta chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha Christian 2-15 Sorority, Incorporated; and 2-16 WHEREAS, Marla and Jesse Barfield were recently named to the 2-17 staff of Lakewood Church to work with the youth of the church; 2-18 Mr. and Mrs. Barfield are also working with the committee on the 2-19 John Jacobs and Power Thomas appearances at the area schools for 2-20 the Harvest of Hope to be held in Houston this month; now, 2-21 therefore, be it 2-22 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-23 74th Legislature, hereby recognize the impressive achievements 2-24 and positive impact of Marla Lorrain Travis Barfield on her 2-25 community; and, be it further 3-1 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-2 Marla Lorrain Travis Barfield as an expression of the high regard 3-3 of the Texas Senate. 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 President of the Senate 3-6 I hereby certify that the above 3-7 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-8 on January 18, 1995. 3-9 ______________________________________ 3-10 Secretary of the Senate 3-11 ______________________________________ 3-12 Member, Texas Senate
