No. 47 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is especially 1-3 proud to recognize Bruce Tansill Aiken of Brownsville for his 1-4 invaluable contributions to the citizens of Texas; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A renowned military historian and author, Mr. Aiken 1-6 is the founding director and executive director of the Historic 1-7 Brownsville Museum; he has devoted his life to preserving the 1-8 history of Brownsville and the surrounding communities; and 1-9 WHEREAS, A native of the city, Mr. Aiken graduated from 1-10 Brownsville High School and received a bachelor's degree from 1-11 Texas A&I University in Kingsville; he continued his higher 1-12 education at Pan American University where he earned a master's 1-13 degree; and 1-14 WHEREAS, He is a former school administrator with the 1-15 Brownsville Independent School District and a member of the 1-16 adjunct faculty at The University of Texas at Brownsville; and 1-17 WHEREAS, An acknowledged authority on local history and 1-18 battles, Bruce Aiken is a retired officer of the United States 1-19 Army and has shared his expertise as a member of various historical 1-20 and military groups including the Brownsville Heritage Council, the 1-21 United States Cavalry Association, and the Descendants of Mexican 1-22 War Veterans; and 1-23 WHEREAS, He has served with distinction as president of 2-1 the Brownsville Historical Association, as vice-chairman of the 2-2 Palo Alto Battlefield Park Site, as chairman of the Cameron County 2-3 Historical Commission and Brownsville United States Bicentennial 2-4 Commission, and as cochairman of the Brownsville Civil War 2-5 Centennial Commission; and 2-6 WHEREAS, His dedication to historical research and his 2-7 outstanding service have brought him special recognition and 2-8 honors from national and state organizations; and 2-9 WHEREAS, For his work on the Palo Alto Battlefield National 2-10 Historic Site, Mr. Aiken received a special commendation from the 2-11 United States Department of the Interior National Park Service; he 2-12 was honored with an appreciation certificate from the National 2-13 Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and a citation for 2-14 distinguished service from the Texas Historical Commission; and 2-15 WHEREAS, To show its gratitude, the City of Brownsville has 2-16 declared January 19, 1995, "Bruce Aiken Day"; now, therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 74th Legislature, hereby recognize January 19, 1995, as "Bruce Aiken 2-19 Day" in Brownsville, Texas, and commend this distinguished gentleman 2-20 for his notable achievements; and, be it further 2-21 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-22 Mr. Aiken as an expression of the admiration and high regard of 2-23 the Texas Senate. 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 President of the Senate 3-1 I hereby certify that the above 3-2 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-3 on January 18, 1995. 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Secretary of the Senate 3-6 ______________________________________ 3-7 Member, Texas Senate
