    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in
    1-3  recognizing Vernus C. Swisher who has been selected as the Citizen
    1-4  of the Month by the Anheuser-Busch Companies and The Houston
    1-5  Defender; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Vernus C. Swisher is well known for his outstanding
    1-7  work with residents of the Fifth Ward in Houston; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, As executive director of the Julia C. Hester House,
    1-9  Mr. Swisher oversees the Swingin' Seniors program, daycare for
   1-10  infants, the before-school and after-school program, the athletic
   1-11  program, and the self-esteem program, Kid's Way; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Vernus Swisher defines the mission of Hester House
   1-13  as serving the social service needs of the residents of the Fifth
   1-14  Ward; in addition to working at Hester House, Mr. Swisher and his
   1-15  wife, Alma, assist the senior citizens at the Thomas Care Nursing
   1-16  Home; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, A humanitarian and a highly respected community
   1-18  leader who generously gives of his time and energy, Vernus Swisher
   1-19  has served as a volunteer for United Way of Texas Gulf Coast and
   1-20  for M. D. Anderson Cancer Treatment Hospital; he earned the
   1-21  Texas Southern University Humanitarian of the Year Award in 1983;
   1-22  and
   1-23        WHEREAS, He also volunteers at Spaulding for Children and
    2-1  the Volunteer Center of Houston; he is an ordained Baptist minister
    2-2  and serves as chairman of the Retail Division for the United
    2-3  Negro College Fund; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Mr. Swisher's concern for others is legendary, and
    2-5  he has played a major role in the betterment of the Fifth Ward
    2-6  community; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman,
    2-8  Vern Swisher is a source of strength to many and his worthy
    2-9  accomplishments reflect his dedication and his commitment to his
   2-10  fellowman; now, therefore, be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-12  74th Legislature, hereby commend Vernus Swisher on his exceptional
   2-13  achievements and extend congratulations to him on his selection as
   2-14  Citizen of the Month; and, be it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
   2-16  as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate.
