1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to honor
1-3 Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr., as he celebrates his 49th birthday on
1-4 January 20, 1995; and
1-5 WHEREAS, The birthday of an eminent colleague is an excellent
1-6 time to pause and reflect on his notable accomplishments and to
1-7 express appreciation to him for his dedication to the citizens of
1-8 Texas; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Since being elected to represent the residents
1-10 of District 27 in 1990, Senator Lucio has worked tirelessly to
1-11 improve public and private education and to increase employment
1-12 opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley; and
1-13 WHEREAS, Ever-mindful of his responsibilities to those he
1-14 so ably serves, Senator Lucio has been an effective leader on
1-15 various Senate committees and subcommittees; he has recently been
1-16 appointed by Lieutenant Governor Bullock to chair the Subcommittee
1-17 on Agriculture of the Natural Resources Committee for the
1-18 74th Legislature; and
1-19 WHEREAS, The son of Eduardo and Josefa Lucio, he was born
1-20 on January 20, 1946, in Brownsville and received his education at
1-21 Texas Southmost College, Texas A&I University, and Pan American
1-22 University where he earned his bachelor of science degree in
1-23 education; and
2-1 WHEREAS, Senator Lucio entered public life in 1971 when
2-2 he ran successfully for Cameron County Treasurer and became the
2-3 youngest county treasurer ever elected in the state at age 25;
2-4 and
2-5 WHEREAS, After serving as Cameron County Commissioner, he
2-6 was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1987 where
2-7 his experience in finances led to his appointment as treasurer
2-8 of the Mexican American Caucus; and
2-9 WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and honors,
2-10 Senator Lucio was honored with the Jose Maria Morales de Pavon
2-11 Merit Award from the National Association of Newspaper Editors
2-12 of Mexico for promoting international relations between the
2-13 United States and Mexico; in 1993 he was cited for outstanding
2-14 service to the Hispanic business community and was named State
2-15 Senator of the Year by the Combined Law Enforcement Associations
2-16 of Texas; 1994 brought further commendations including the
2-17 Senator John A. Traeger Award for Legislator of the Year by the
2-18 Texas Public Employees Association; and
2-19 WHEREAS, His family has been a constant source of support
2-20 and encouragement throughout his productive life; sharing in the
2-21 concerns and accomplishments of this esteemed senator are his
2-22 lovely wife, Minnie, and their children, Lynda and Eddie III;
2-23 now, therefore, be it
2-24 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-25 74th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes for a most enjoyable
3-1 49th birthday to Senator Eddie Lucio; and, be it further
3-2 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3-3 him as an expression of deepest admiration from the Texas Senate.
