    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
    1-3  recognizing Tuesday, February 2, 1995, as National Girls and
    1-4  Women in Sports Day; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Inspired by the death of the great Olympic volleyball
    1-6  player, Flo Hyman, National Girls and Women in Sports Day was
    1-7  established as a tribute to women athletes of all ages throughout
    1-8  our country; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Organized by Girls, Incorporated, the National
   1-10  Association for Girls and Women in Sports, the Women's Sports
   1-11  Foundation, and the Young Women's Christian Association of America,
   1-12  the day commemorates the athletic skills and the efforts of all
   1-13  female sports leaders who have worked on behalf of equality of
   1-14  women in sports; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Participation in sports fosters self-discipline
   1-16  and leadership skills and augments physical fitness, and it is
   1-17  important that more girls and women be encouraged to embrace sports
   1-18  careers and seek office in athletic organizations; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, National Girls and Women in Sports Day provides an
   1-20  opportunity to raise major issues in sports with our country's
   1-21  leaders; each year a ceremony is held on Capitol Hill that is
   1-22  attended by members of congress and champion female athletes; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, National Girls and Women in Sports Day provides an
    2-1  opportunity to honor today's female athletes for their exceptional
    2-2  achievements and for their exemplary hard work and perseverance;
    2-3  now, therefore, be it
    2-4        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-5  74th Legislature, hereby join the organizers of National Girls
    2-6  and Women in Sports Day in expressing pride in our female athletes;
    2-7  and, be it further
    2-8        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for girls
    2-9  and women in sports as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate.
