    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                     Shirley Ann Oliver Covington
    1-5        WHEREAS, The citizens of Dallas mourned the passing of
    1-6  Shirley Ann Oliver Covington who died January 18, 1995, at the
    1-7  age of 48; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, The well-known civic leader and political activist
    1-9  dedicated her life to helping others and will be remembered with
   1-10  gratitude for her important contributions to her community; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Shirley Covington was born on September 9, 1946,
   1-12  and had spent her adult life working tirelessly for those causes
   1-13  she held dear; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, A lifelong Democrat, she was recognized throughout
   1-15  the Democratic Party for her devotion to its ideals and for her
   1-16  countless hours of volunteer work on various committees; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, At the time of her death, Shirley Covington was
   1-18  chair of the Dallas Community Development Advisory Committee of
   1-19  which she had been a member since 1988; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Widely recognized for her experience and knowledge
   1-21  as a political consultant, she had worked on several election
   1-22  campaigns and served with distinction as a delegate to numerous
   1-23  state conventions and senatorial district conventions; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Deeply interested in helping to improve the lives
    2-2  of children, Ms. Covington served on the Attorney General's
    2-3  Advisory Committee on Child Support in 1989; she received an
    2-4  award for her work with the National Community Development Group
    2-5  from the Children's Advocacy Center in Washington, D.C.; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, A member of the Coalition of Black Democrats and
    2-7  the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People,
    2-8  Shirley Covington was selected for the Outstanding Black Texan
    2-9  Award by the Legislative Black Caucus in 1991; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, Her wise counsel will be deeply missed, and her
   2-11  outstanding accomplishments will continue to bear fruit in the
   2-12  years to come; now, therefore, be it
   2-13        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-14  74th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
   2-15  family of Shirley Ann Oliver Covington; and, be it further
   2-16        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-17  members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
   2-18  the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
   2-19  it do so in memory of Shirley Covington.
