1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, Orange County Day at the State Capitol is a
1-3 special time set aside to honor the citizens of Orange County
1-4 and the county's unique contributions to the State of Texas;
1-5 and
1-6 WHEREAS, Located in the southeast corner of Texas on the
1-7 Louisiana border, Orange County is bounded on the east by the
1-8 Sabine River and on the south and west by the Neches River; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Originally the home of the Attacapa Indians, the
1-10 area saw little early exploration until the Cow Bayou settlement
1-11 was established on the east bank of the bayou; and
1-12 WHEREAS, Created from Jefferson County on January 5, 1852,
1-13 Orange County was named by George A. Patillo who had an orange
1-14 grove near the east bank of the Neches River; Madison became the
1-15 county seat and was later renamed Orange; and
1-16 WHEREAS, Two-thirds of the county is timbered in hardwood
1-17 and short-leaf pine forests while one-third is coastal prairie;
1-18 the sandy loam and black alluvial soil produces an abundance of
1-19 rice, vegetables, fruits, and honey; and
1-20 WHEREAS, Rich in natural resources, Orange County is a
1-21 major producer of oil and chemicals; since oil was discovered
1-22 in 1913, the area has developed miles of modern plants known as
1-23 "Chemical Row" that produce myriad products derived from petroleum;
2-1 and
2-2 WHEREAS, The manufacture of lumber and shingles was the
2-3 first industrial development in the region when R. E. Boothe
2-4 located machinery for his sawmill near the present-day City
2-5 of Orange in 1836; the production and processing of lumber and
2-6 shipbuilding continue to be important to the county's rich
2-7 economy; and
2-8 WHEREAS, The Port of Orange is a deepwater terminal
2-9 42 miles inland at the junction of the Sabine-Neches and Gulf
2-10 Intracoastal Waterways; in peacetime the United States Navy
2-11 berths some 150 warships of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet at the
2-12 Naval Station on the Sabine River at Orange; and
2-13 WHEREAS, Visitors and sports enthusiasts enjoy recreational
2-14 fresh and saltwater fishing, hunting, and bird-watching in the
2-15 area's vast coastal marshes; and
2-16 WHEREAS, Orange County Day is an appropriate occasion for
2-17 the Texas Senate to recognize the important contributions that
2-18 Orange County and its people have made and will continue to make
2-19 to our state's greatness; now, therefore, be it
2-20 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-21 74th Legislature, hereby extend warmest wishes to the citizens
2-22 of Orange County for a most memorable celebration of Orange County
2-23 Day on January 30, 1995; and, be it further
2-24 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
2-25 memento of this notable day and as an expression of the admiration
3-1 of the Texas Senate.
