1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased and
1-3 honored to recognize outstanding civic leader Bernard Rapoport
1-4 as he receives the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of
1-5 McLennan County children and youth; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Born July 17, 1917, in San Antonio, Texas,
1-7 Mr. Rapoport graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and
1-8 earned his bachelor of arts degree from The University of Texas
1-9 at Austin in 1939; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American
1-11 Income Life Insurance Company, he founded the company in 1951; and
1-12 WHEREAS, Generous with his time and talents on behalf of
1-13 causes he believes in, Mr. Rapoport has been chairman of the United
1-14 Negro College Fund and the United Way of Waco; and
1-15 WHEREAS, This renowned civic leader has actively supported
1-16 the Central Texas Sickle Cell Anemia Association, the National
1-17 Council on Crime and Delinquency, the Jerusalem Foundation,
1-18 Incorporated, and the American Jewish Congress; and
1-19 WHEREAS, Mr. Rapoport has been a staunch advocate of
1-20 educational excellence in our nation's public and private
1-21 institutions of higher education and served as Chairman of
1-22 the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System and as
1-23 a member of the Advisory Board of Rutgers University; and
2-1 WHEREAS, In 1983 he established the Rapoport Centennial
2-2 Chair in Economics and Public Affairs, the Audre and Bernard
2-3 Rapoport Regent's Chair, the Frank C. Erwin, Jr., Professorship
2-4 in Government, the Ralph W. Yarborough Centennial Professorship
2-5 of Liberal Arts, the Edward Everett Hale Centennial Professorship
2-6 in Economics, and the Rapoport Centennial Professorship of Liberal
2-7 Arts at The University of Texas at Austin; and
2-8 WHEREAS, A gentleman who believes in civic duty, Mr. Rapoport
2-9 is an honorary trustee of the National Foundation for Hospice and
2-10 Home Care, a trustee of the Boys Club of Waco, and a member of the
2-11 Board of Governors of the Texas Arts Alliance; and
2-12 WHEREAS, The citizens of Waco and the State of Texas have
2-13 benefitted immeasurably from the concern and involvement that
2-14 Mr. Rapoport has shown throughout his life; now, therefore, be it
2-15 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-16 74th Legislature, hereby congratulate Bernard Rapoport on being
2-17 honored by receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of
2-18 McClennan County children and youth; and, be it further
2-19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-20 him as an expression of the appreciation and high regard of the
2-21 Texas Senate.
