1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great pride
1-3 in welcoming the Honorable J. G. C. Wiebenga of the European
1-4 Parliament on his visit to the State of Texas; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Mr. Wiebenga became a member of the European
1-6 Parliament in 1994 after having served in the Senate and the
1-7 House of Representatives in the Netherlands; he was formerly an
1-8 assistant at Leiden University and was Mayor of Eelde from 1973
1-9 to 1982; and
1-10 WHEREAS, He is a guest in the United States through the
1-11 Institute for Representative Government, a nonprofit educational
1-12 institution established by former members of the Congress of the
1-13 United States to provide professionally focused exchange programs
1-14 for legislators and legislatures of foreign democracies; and
1-15 WHEREAS, The institute brings delegations from foreign
1-16 legislatures to the United States for two weeks of intensive
1-17 study of the Congress and the American political system; the
1-18 programs generally include examination of the United States
1-19 constitutional structure, the role of Congress in trade and
1-20 defense and budgeting, the role of interest groups and lobbying,
1-21 and the effects of America's geographic, economic, and ethnic
1-22 diversity; and
1-23 WHEREAS, A highly respected participant in this exchange
2-1 program, Mr. Wiebenga brings with him a wealth of knowledge
2-2 and many interests, including immigration and criminality; his
2-3 particular concerns include drug policy, police organization,
2-4 border patrol, and the national immigration service; and
2-5 WHEREAS, Mr. Wiebenga is an esteemed member of the European
2-6 Parliament, and it is an honor for the people of Texas to have
2-7 this distinguished visitor in the Lone Star State; now, therefore,
2-8 be it
2-9 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-10 74th Legislature, hereby extend hospitality and a warm welcome
2-11 to J. G. C. Wiebenga and send best wishes to him for a productive
2-12 visit in the United States; and, be it further
2-13 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
2-14 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
