No. 124 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to salute 1-3 the Copperas Cove community as it celebrates Copperas Cove Day on 1-4 January 31, 1995, at the State Capitol; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Copperas Cove is the home of many honorable Texans 1-6 who are proud of their community and its rich history; and 1-7 WHEREAS, In the 1840s pioneers began to settle in a natural 1-8 basin called Ogletree Gap Valley close to an area that was 1-9 originally inhabited by Tonkawa Indians; the valley was the 1-10 place where cattle drives stopped overnight on their way to the 1-11 Chisholm Trail; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The town, in southwest Coryell County, obtained a 1-13 post office in 1879, with Marsden Ogletree as the first postmaster; 1-14 it was moved to its existing site when the Santa Fe Railroad came 1-15 to town; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Copperas Cove remained a small town until Camp Hood, 1-17 later known as Fort Hood, began to be built in 1942; since then, 1-18 Fort Hood has become the largest military installation in the free 1-19 world, covering 339 square miles; and 1-20 WHEREAS, The large size of Fort Hood has proved to be an 1-21 economic boon to the town of Copperas Cove, and many of Fort Hood's 1-22 people have contributed to the ethnic diversity of Copperas Cove 1-23 and have imparted a feeling of patriotism to the area; and 2-1 WHEREAS, With an 88-acre park, the city has many recreational 2-2 facilities for the inhabitants to enjoy; there are two higher 2-3 educational institutions, Central Texas College and the University 2-4 of Central Texas, which offer classes; and 2-5 WHEREAS, This charming community has as its greatest asset 2-6 its citizenry; they have made a town that is truly deserving of 2-7 legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-9 74th Legislature, hereby declare January 31, 1995, as Copperas Cove 2-10 Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to residents of 2-11 that fair city; and, be it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-13 town as a memento of this special day. 2-14 ______________________________________ 2-15 President of the Senate 2-16 I hereby certify that the above 2-17 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-18 on January 30, 1995. 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 Secretary of the Senate 2-21 ______________________________________ 2-22 Member, Texas Senate
