No. 131 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, Recognized as a young progressive community, Odessa 1-3 is a city with an eye on the future; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Located in the state's leading oil-producing county, 1-5 Odessa is considered the center for oil field operations and 1-6 petrochemical production for the Permian Basin; and 1-7 WHEREAS, The City of Odessa is also a center for agricultural 1-8 businesses in the region engaged in beef cattle, poultry, pecans, 1-9 and hay operations; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Two exceptional institutions of higher learning are 1-11 found within the city: The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, 1-12 which has expanded its educational offerings to four-year programs in 1-13 fields ranging from art to land management; and Odessa College, a 1-14 community college which specializes in a variety of liberal arts and 1-15 vocational-technical training; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Along with its vital energy and agricultural, 1-17 business, medical, and educational opportunities, this outstanding 1-18 Permian Basin city is also a cultural, entertainment, and recreation 1-19 center with: The Globe of the Great Southwest, a replica of 1-20 Shakespeare's original Globe Theater; the Presidential Museum, 1-21 dedicated to commemorating the office of the presidency and all 1-22 the men who have served in this office; the Art Institute for the 1-23 Permian Basin; the Permian Playhouse, ranked as one of the 10 best 2-1 community theaters in the nation in 1991; and the Odessa Chuck Wagon 2-2 Gang, which has promoted Odessa's unique hospitality and Texan 2-3 cuisine since 1940; and 2-4 WHEREAS, The citizens of Odessa and the surrounding region 2-5 are to be commended on such noteworthy annual events as the 2-6 Shakespeare Festival, Renaissance Fair, and Permian Basin Fair 2-7 and Expo; and 2-8 WHEREAS, This fine city also boasts the second largest meteor 2-9 crater in the United States, located just west of the city; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Odessa is a dynamic, ambitious city, representative 2-11 of the spirit of Texas, and it is appropriate that the Texas Senate 2-12 recognize the citizens of that outstanding community for their 2-13 numerous contributions and accomplishments; now, therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-15 74th Legislature, hereby designate February 1, 1995, as "Odessa 2-16 Day" and welcome the Odessa delegation to the State Capitol; and, 2-17 be it further 2-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 2-19 prepared for the City of Odessa in recognition of this special 2-20 occasion and as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. 2-21 Montford 2-22 Bivins 2-23 Armbrister Leedom Rosson 2-24 Barrientos Lucio Shapiro 2-25 Brown Luna Sibley 3-1 Cain Madla Sims 3-2 Ellis Moncrief Truan 3-3 Gallegos Nelson Turner 3-4 Galloway Nixon Wentworth 3-5 Harris Patterson West 3-6 Haywood Ratliff Whitmire 3-7 Henderson Zaffirini 3-8 Bullock, President of the Senate 3-9 ______________________________________ 3-10 President of the Senate 3-11 I hereby certify that the above 3-12 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-13 on February 1, 1995. 3-14 ______________________________________ 3-15 Secretary of the Senate 3-16 ______________________________________ 3-17 Member, Texas Senate
