    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas proudly joins
    1-3  citizens throughout the country in recognizing the month of
    1-4  February, 1995, as Black History Month; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Carter Godwin Woodson, "the father of Black
    1-6  history," and the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life
    1-7  and History originally designated a week in February as Black
    1-8  History Week; this observance was extended, however, when in 1976,
    1-9  President Jimmy Carter proclaimed February as Black History Month;
   1-10  and
   1-11        WHEREAS, It is appropriate that our nation pay tribute to
   1-12  all our ethnic groups who have strengthened our country; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, People from all over the world have settled in the
   1-14  United States of America, bringing with them invaluable pieces of
   1-15  their own heritage and time-honored traditions; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The outstanding accomplishments of men and women
   1-17  from Black cultures are legendary throughout our history, and they
   1-18  have contributed in countless ways to our country's enrichment; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Black History Month provides American citizens an
   1-20  opportunity to express appreciation to the Black men and women who
   1-21  have made innumerable contributions to our society and to the many
   1-22  talented Black leaders who have inspired Americans to reaffirm
   1-23  their commitment to equal justice and opportunity for all; now,
    2-1  therefore, be it
    2-2        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-3  74th Legislature, hereby laud the observance of Black History Month
    2-4  and encourage citizens across the state to celebrate this nation's
    2-5  African-American heritage; and, be it further
    2-6        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor
    2-7  of Black History Month.
