    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
    1-3  recognize Alice L. Brown for her notable contributions in the
    1-4  areas of human rights and social justice; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Employed by the National Association for the
    1-6  Advancement of Colored People Legal Defense and Educational Fund,
    1-7  Alice Brown is an assistant counsel in the Poverty and Justice
    1-8  Program where she is involved in preserving, improving, and
    1-9  expanding low-income housing and protecting the environmental
   1-10  quality of African American communities; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, As a program officer with the Ford Foundation from
   1-12  1986 to 1990, she shared the responsibility for the development
   1-13  and coordination of program activities relating to South Africa
   1-14  and Namibia; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, A 1978 graduate of Dartmouth College with a bachelor
   1-16  of arts degree with honors in history, Alice Brown continued her
   1-17  studies in African History at Northwestern University Graduate
   1-18  School; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, The recipient of the Association for Black Women
   1-20  Attorneys Scholarship and the Bedford-Stuyvesant Lawyers Association
   1-21  Scholarship, she earned her juris doctor degree from New York
   1-22  University School of Law in 1984, where she was an Arthur Garfield
   1-23  Hays Civil Liberties Fellow; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, After pursuing a legal career as a research
    2-2  associate and a judicial clerk, Alice Brown returned to school
    2-3  in 1993 at Princeton University Woodrow Wilson School of Public
    2-4  and International Affairs; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, She has appeared before the Subcommittee on Housing
    2-6  and Urban Affairs of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and
    2-7  Urban Affairs:  Hearing on Distressed Public Housing and Hearing on
    2-8  Residential Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction Act of 1992; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, She has published articles in various newsletters
   2-10  and publications on environmental justice and race discrimination
   2-11  and has addressed numerous groups, including law schools, colleges,
   2-12  and high schools, on related topics; now, therefore, be it
   2-13        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-14  74th Legislature, hereby commend Alice L. Brown for her important
   2-15  work in the fight for justice, equality, and peace; and, be it
   2-16  further
   2-17        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
   2-18  as an expression of the appreciation of the Texas Senate.
