    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great
    1-3  pleasure in welcoming the Tibetan monks from the Drepung Loseling
    1-4  Monastery in India who are visiting the City of Austin the week of
    1-5  February 4 through February 10, 1995; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, During their historic visit the monks will
    1-7  perform a ceremony on February 6 on the south steps of the Capitol
    1-8  to bless the newly restored Capitol Building and to pray for world
    1-9  harmony; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, While in Austin the monks will also perform
   1-11  "Sacred Music Sacred Dance for World Healing" at Bass Concert Hall,
   1-12  create a Sand Mandala Art Exhibit for environmental purification,
   1-13  bless Barton Springs at a ceremony for environmental healing, and
   1-14  offer lectures on Tibetan culture; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, The ten Tibetan monks are visiting the United States
   1-16  to raise awareness among Americans of the importance of Tibetan
   1-17  culture and its people; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, Tibetan monks in India have rebuilt their ancient
   1-19  schools of learning, including the Drepung Loseling Monastery
   1-20  where some 2,200 students are educated in the Tibetan language,
   1-21  history, and culture; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, President George Bush signed the Immigration Act of
   1-23  1990 which allowed 1,000 Tibetans to immigrate to the United States;
    2-1  16 Tibetans now live and work in Austin as a result of the
    2-2  humanitarian efforts of the Tibetan Resettlement Project, which
    2-3  is hosting the visiting monks during their stay in the Capital City;
    2-4  now, therefore, be it
    2-5        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-6  74th Legislature, hereby declare the week of February 4 through
    2-7  February 10 as Tibetan Awareness Week in Austin in celebration of
    2-8  the culture and history of the Tibetan people; and, be it further
    2-9        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-10  this distinguished group of monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery
   2-11  as an expression of the appreciation and respect of the Texas Senate.
