    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
    1-3  recognize Dr. John W. Nichols who has been named the Man of
    1-4  the Year by the Galena Park Chamber of Commerce; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Born and raised in Jackson, Michigan, he attended
    1-6  Michigan State University, Sam Houston State University, and
    1-7  the University of Oklahoma; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, John Nichols moved to Texas to enter Baylor College
    1-9  of Medicine before serving his residency and practicing internal
   1-10  medicine at City Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Dr. Nichols honored his obligation to serve his
   1-12  country in the United States Air Force Medical Corps; he reached
   1-13  the rank of Captain and became Chief of Medicine at Ellington Air
   1-14  Force Base Hospital; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, In 1954, he accepted a position as a physician with
   1-16  Deaton Hospital and he and his family settled in Galena Park; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Elected a member of the Board of Trustees of
   1-18  Galena Park Independent School District, he served in that
   1-19  position for 10 years until he was made President in 1969; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, This outstanding gentleman was elected to serve
   1-21  on the Board of Regents of San Jacinto Community College and
   1-22  is still a trustee; he has served as the Regents' Secretary,
   1-23  Vice-Chair, and Chairman; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Touted for his countless hours spent in community
    2-2  activity, Dr. Nichols feels that energy should be returned to
    2-3  the community; he is a member of the Board of Directors of the
    2-4  Association of Community College Trustees, has served nationally
    2-5  as its Second Vice-President, First Vice-President, and President,
    2-6  and was recently made a life member; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, Involved in a wide variety of civic activities,
    2-8  he is a member of the Texas Society of the Sons of the American
    2-9  Revolution, Paul Covington Chapter, and has received the Bronze
   2-10  Good Citizenship Medal; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, A diligent and hardworking man, Dr. Nichols has
   2-12  been an active member of the Galena Park Chamber of Commerce
   2-13  and was appointed by Governor Clements to the District Review
   2-14  Committee of the State Medical Examiners' Board; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, A man who believes in keeping his commitments,
   2-16  Dr. Nichols has maintained a perfect 40-year record of attendance
   2-17  at the Galena Park Rotary Club and has been its President; his
   2-18  fellow Rotarians awarded him the Paul Harris Fellowship and last
   2-19  year a Rotary scholarship for San Jacinto College was named in
   2-20  his honor; and
   2-21        WHEREAS, He is a Charter Fellow of the American Academy
   2-22  of Family Physicians, was named a life member, and was
   2-23  appointed associate professor of Family Practice at Baylor
   2-24  College of Medicine; he is serving on the clinical faculty of
   2-25  The University of Texas Health Science Center and is teaching
    3-1  medical students and residents in family practice; and
    3-2        WHEREAS, Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Nichols
    3-3  has been supported by the love of his wife, his four children,
    3-4  and his eight grandchildren; and
    3-5        WHEREAS, His meritorious work and exemplary devotion to his
    3-6  community and his profession have earned Dr. John W. Nichols the
    3-7  admiration and esteem of his peers and the citizens of Galena Park;
    3-8  now, therefore, be it
    3-9        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   3-10  74th Legislature, hereby congratulate Dr. John W. Nichols on
   3-11  being named the 1994 Galena Park Chamber of Commerce's Man of the
   3-12  Year; and, be it further
   3-13        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
   3-14  as an expression of the high regard and esteem of the Texas Senate.
